Id v. Ego – thoughts on interpretation

Id: It was a superb interpretation of Chopin. Just as he would have wished.
Ego: How can you possibly say that? You can’t even read music, let alone play Chopin.
Id: Sorry. That’s what the person in front said and I think she is very knowledgable on music.
Ego: So what? She was not alive to hear Chopin play it himself, so how can she tell?
Id: Well the music score has directions for the pianist – fortissimo, accellerando, moderato, vivaci, andante and so forth.
Ego: May be that will help in a general sense, but every note would need an instruction to ensure that it was played as Chopin wished.
Id: I think the pianist was taught by someone who was taught by someone who was taught by someone who was taught by someone who was a pupil of Chopin.
Ego: And Picasso was probably taught by someone who was taught by someone who was taught by someone who was taught by someone who was a pupil of Goya. So what?
Id: Well is just sounded perfect.
Ego: To say that you have to have a reference point to make that comparison. As Chopin was not able to make a high quality digital recording there is no reference point.
Id: Well the music score has directions for the pianist – fortissimo, accellerando, moderato, vivaci, andante and so forth.
Ego: Really! Would you care for a glass of wine? Its a superb gewurztraminer.
Id: How can you possibly say that? You didn’t pick the grapes, let alone make the wine.
Ego: Sorry. That’s what the person in the wine shop said and I think he is very knowledgable on wine.
Id: So what? He was not at the vineyard, so how can he tell?
Ego: Well the label on the bottle says it was made by Kuentz-Bas, one of the leading producers in Alsace.
Id: May be that will help in a general sense, but this is one specific Alsatian wine.
Ego: Ah! The vines grew in the Appellation Alsace Grand Cru Controlée Eichberg vineyard.
Id: And the vines that produce Mateus Rosé come from the north of Portugal. So what?
Ego: Well it just tastes perfect.
Id: To say that you have to have a reference point to make that comparison. Wine makers are not able to make an unchanging record of bouquet, colour, taste, etcetera, so there is no reference point.
Ego: Well the label on the bottle says it was made by Kuentz-Bas, one of the leading producers in Alsace.
Id: Really! Shall we have another glass of wine?
Ego: Certainly! And we can listen to this Chopin CD. I believe its a superb interpretation.
